Popis | Our understanding of Early Medieval power centres in the Balkans has been updated by recent findings made in the region that was home to the First Bulgarian Empire (681–1018). These include, in particular, the site Pliska, the home of the Bulgarian ruling elite. Since the late 19th century, archaeological excavations have been conducted here, revealing nobility houses, pagan and Christian sacred structures, rulers’ palaces, and general population dwellings. However, the true extent of the city has only recently been clarified through extensive geophysical prospection. Magnetic surveys have enabled us to reconstruct Pliska’s urban layout, gain insights into its functioning, and compare it with other contemporary centres. |
