Outsourcing deforestation: assessing the role of the Czech Republic and the EU

• Popis: Although many economies have reduced their rates of deforestation in recent decades, they have simultaneously increased their imports, thereby replacing domestic deforestation with foreign deforestation. In this paper, we use data on deforestation embedded in the international trade and domestic consumption of forest-risk commodities to estimate a Kuznets curve both for produced and consumed deforestation. We assess the position of the Czech Republic relative to other European Union (EU) economies and examine whether this position has changed significantly compared to the period before the COVID-19 pandemic.
