Bilateral quantitative changes of laminin-1 in the spinal nerve roots after unilateral sciatic nerve injury

| Description | Changes of laminin-1 (lam-1) were investigated in rat spinal nerve roots after unilateral sciatic nerve ligature. Spinal nerve roots of naive rats displayed lam-1 immunostaining in the basal laminae on outer surface of Schwann cell/axon units with higher brightness in ventral than dorsal roots. Bilateral enhancement of lam-1 immunofluorescence was found in the endoneurium of roots 1 and 3 days after nerve ligature. Compared to rats surviving for 1 or 3 days, apparent bilateral decrease of lam-1 immunofluorescence brightness was observed in both roots 7 days after nerve injury. The lam-1 alterations in ipsi- and contralateral roots were similar, but more distinct in roots of ipsilateral side. The results suggest that quantitative changes of lam-1 are present bilaterally in the endoneurium of spinal nerve roots after unilateral sciatic nerve ligature. |
