| Description | This concluding chapter synthesizes the findings of the volume on extreme right-wing foreign fighters, highlighting their historical continuity, ideological diversity and strategic impact. Spanning conflicts from the Spanish Civil War to the war in Ukraine, the chapter demonstrates how far-right foreign fighters have emerged in various geopolitical contexts—motivated by ideological conviction, anti-communism, nationalism or opportunism. While these actors have rarely altered the military course of conflicts, their symbolic and propagandistic significance has been profound. The chapter outlines patterns in recruitment, organizational structure and battlefield roles, noting the challenges in distinguishing ideologically motivated fighters from mercenaries or state proxies. It also explores the transnational networks that link far-right militants and how battlefield experiences strengthen domestic extremist movements. Moreover, the authors identify emerging threats, including the use of far-right fighters in hybrid warfare, propaganda and future technological conflict scenarios. The role of veterans in post-conflict radicalization and extremist organizing is emphasized. Concluding, the chapter argues for greater scholarly attention and policy engagement, as the phenomenon of extreme right-wing foreign fighters not only reflects historical precedents but also poses evolving security risks shaped by ideological shifts, digital mobilization and global instability. |
