Description The paper deals with a comparison of the development of the cultural landscape and its detectable changes resulting from the influence of anthropogenic activities in the areas of the former Brtnice estate, located in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands (Czech Republic), and the La Roche estate, located in the Burgundian Morvan (France). Similar geomorphological and geological conditions serve as the basic factors for comparing the course of landscape use, the formation of settlement structures, and the economies documented within them, in contrast to the established administrative structures reinforced by the political situation during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period. The study not only tracks the impact of the analogous relocation of central sites and changes in their surroundings but also the appearance of individual settlement units along with their economic hinterlands. For a basic comparison of the two studied areas, Lidar imagery was used in combination with cartographic sources, which are variously available for the analyzed regions. Lidar data are already freely available for the Czech lands, whereas data from the French side were provided by Le Centre archéologique Européen de Bibracte. Cartographic sources primarily consist of private as well as state-produced maps, which are used as references for the appearance of landscape segments in both cases, at the latest for the period shortly after the mid-18th century.
