| Description | Health is not merely a biological state or the absence of disease, but a set of skills that can be learned and actively developed. This presentation introduces the concept of health as a competence and highlights how this approach can transform the way medicine and healthcare address prevention. The population is highly heterogeneous in terms of readiness for change. Successful preventive programs must therefore target different groups using different methods—synergistically, in parallel, and across various timeframes. This requires not only advanced knowledge from behavioral sciences and health psychology but also the engagement of healthcare professionals across the system, from general practitioners to specialists. A key prerequisite for success is that healthcare professionals themselves believe in prevention and that prevention is embedded not only in health policy but also in the educational system. The presentation will therefore also touch on the need to revise medical school curricula and redefine the role of public health within the system of care for healthy populations. |
