| Description | This talk explores the triggers and outcomes of Czech palatalization within a recursive model of phonology. I argue that palatalization is often triggered by floating melody material at morphological boundaries, which cannot be externalized unless it merges with a suitable host. I adopt a lexically driven (re)merge approach at both the CV and subsegmental levels, proposing that such merge is lexically motivated. The variation in palatalization outcomes is captured through the nanosyntactic lexicalization algorithm, which accounts for all three cross-linguistic patterns: allophony, PAL deletion, and glidization. |
