Description | The hospital burial ground surrounding the Church of St. Elizabeth, which is located on today’s Náměstí Svobody, was studied as part of the analysis of the skeletal material of juveniles from Znojmo. This hospital functioned at least since the mid-14th century until nearly 1600, when it was closed. Due to the nature of this burial site, the skeletal material found revealed some anthropologically interesting findings, including traces of decapitation related to the presence of a nearby execution site. In addition, signs of the tertiary stage of syphilis were found in several individuals, two of whom were determined to be juveniles with the congenital form of the disease. These juveniles, with most of their bones severely affected by the late stage of syphilis, were further examined and described. |
