Description | During the battles of the First World War in the Carpathians, soldiers were confronted not only by enemy forces but also by a harsh and unfamiliar climate. They were forced to adapt to conditions for which they had not been trained—conditions not described in military manuals and never anticipated as part of a prolonged battlefield environment. Nevertheless, these very experiences later shaped their readiness for combat on the Italian front. Our archaeological research has uncovered material evidence that sheds light on the daily lives of soldiers and their adaptation to these extreme circumstances. By integrating archival, historical, and archaeological sources, it is possible to reconstruct not only the course of events but also the environmental context of the Carpathian battles, offering deeper insight into the challenges soldiers faced in this region 110 years ago. |
