Description | In a pilot study involving new pools created in the last 10 years, we found high nutrient concentrations corresponding to eutrophic to hypertrophic waters. Although fish stocking was not planned, fish were present in about 70% of the pools surveyed, invasive species were present in 60% of the pools, and invasives dominated the fish community in 40%. The most common species were Psudorasbora parva, Carassius gibelio and Scardinius erythrophthalmus. The age of the studied pools did not influence the presence of fish, suggesting that fish colonisation of the pools is not a manifestation of natural succession. In contrast, larger size and average depth were significant predictors of fish presence. Fish were then the main factor influencing the quality of the environment and the communities of organisms present. Pools with fish had significantly lower transparency, less submerged vegetation cover, lower amphibian reproduction, and fewer species and individuals of zooplankton. |
