| Description | The cause of severe pneumonia and immunocompromised persons has been a mystery for many years. Initially thought to be a protozoan, it was only decades later, thanks to the possibilities of genetic testing, that it was taxonomically placed in the fungal kingdom. Its naming went through a similarly complex process, but in honour of the Czech scientist Otto Jirovec, it eventually became established in medicine as Pneumocystis jirovecii. |
