Description This retrospective article reviews the history of the use of polyurethane foam for air sampling of semi-volatile organic compounds. The article covers the initial development of the technique, its successful application in active air sampling and overviews the breadth of its use. It also reviews the development of polyurethane foam passive air sampling, and its current application in global air sampling networks.
