Fine-scale vertical stratification and guild composition of saproxylic beetles in lowland and montane forests: Similar patterns despite low faunal overlap

| Description | The stratification of saproxylic beetles flying at different heights was studied at forest sites located in two study areas (lowland: Dyje-Morava floodplains of South Moravia; mountains: Moravian-Silesian Beskids) and two forest habitats (oak-ash dominated floodplain forest; montane beech-fir forest) of Czechia, Central Europe. The beetles were sampled using flight interception traps arranged into vertical transects (5 traps from 0.4 m to 21 m above ground). 381 species were collected in the lowland and 236 in the mountains, with only 105 present in both. Species richness peaked at 1.2 m and the change in assemblage composition was most pronounced near the ground in both habitats. |
