Our new colleague Mohammed Yehia Abbass from Egypt has just joined one of our teams at postdoc position. Read in a short interview how he learned about the possibility of working for us, what he will be in charge of and what he likes in the Czech Republic.

Hello Yehia. Can you introduce yourself briefly?

My name is Mohammed Yehia, but most of my friends and colleagues called me Yehia. I am married and I am a father of 3 daughters. I grow in Cairo, Egypt, where I finished my bachelor's and master's degrees in Electronics and Communications department in Egypt. Also, I got a Ph.D. degree in the Electronics department in South Korea.

I am friendly and like to know new friends and cultures. I have several friends from different countries such as India, Korea, Nepal, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, China, Mongolia, Algeria, and Bangladesh. I am always willing to try new and adventure activities. I often spend my spare time between family, hang out, and gym.

How did you find the job at the Institute of Computer Science, Masaryk University?

I have seen the announcement on Facebook. One page, which is keen on research and scientific projects, shared the announcement. I have submitted my application. Then, the HR department contacted me, and arranged an online interview with the committee, who are professors and experts in the machine learning area. I prepared slides to introduce myself and show my skills, and latest work in the area of deep learning and machine learning. Also, I received several questions from the committee about my previous published papers, research goals, and future plan. Finally, I got accepted, and hope to make a vital contribution.

Was the relocation process from Egypt to the Czech Republic difficult?

The relocation was easy and smooth. I had a direct flight from Egypt to the Czech Republic. That flight took only between 4~5 hours. Also, the HR and International office guided me to reach the accommodation from the airport and they perfectly arranged all visa documents and convenient accommodation. They helped me as well to quickly understand the system, open a bank account, and finish all residence process at the immigration office. For example, I finished the residence process at the immigration office within 10 minutes because they gave me all the necessary documents.

What are the biggest differences between living/working in the Czech Republic and Egypt?

The big difference is transportation. Egypt has a variety of public transportation, but the Czech Republic has accurate time schedules, which help the people to arrange their time schedules.

What do you like the most here?

The old buildings and churches are amazing. Good infrastructure at the ICS (such as high-speed internet or powerful computers) and good location are also impressing me.

What is your job description? What are you going to do next months?

I am focusing on applying machine learning in current topics especially Mass Spectrometry. I also develop some existing ideas to publish papers. Next month, I have willing to focus more on my research topic. My family is supposed to visit me, then, I will spend more time with them.
