Description This paper provides an overview of current knowledge regarding sex differences in cardiac remodeling in the DOCA/salt model, describes the methodology of our experiment in detail, and analyzes key results, including an assessment of the suitability of this model for further research into sex differences in myocardial remodeling. The aim of our experiment was to compare the course of cardiac remodeling in male and female rats in a DOCA/salt model with a reduced salt dose. Myocardial remodeling was induced by unilateral nephrectomy and mineralocorticoid stimulation. Deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) was administered subcutaneously at a depot dose of 20 mg once weekly for 6 weeks. Half of the animals were exposed to increased salt intake in drinking water (0.3% NaCl + 0.1% KCl). Cardiac function was regularly monitored using magnetic resonance imaging. At the end of the experiment, the functional effects of remodeling were assessed by measuring left ventricular pressure-volume parameters via catheterization. Structural changes in the myocardium were analyzed by histopathological examination of cardiac tissue. Our results suggest that males undergo more pronounced cardiac remodeling accompanied by the development of myocardial fibrosis, and this process is not influenced by the amount of salt administered. In females, these changes were less pronounced, which is consistent with our hypotheses and with previously published data.
