Description Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death globally. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors explain only 75% of the risk for cardiovascular disease and exposure to one or more vascular risk factors is common even in individuals who will not develop any clinical manifestations. Ceramides are a heterogeneous group of bioactive membrane sphingolipids that play specialized regulatory roles in cellular metabolism. Ceramides have been identified as novel biomarkers for cardiovascular diseases.
