| Description | Historically, the immune system’s sole function was considered to be its ability to protect the body against infections, that is, to ensure its defensive capabilities. Today, we know that the immune system’s function is significantly more complex and that its general role is to maintain the stability, or homeostasis, of the internal environment. Its function is made possible by its ability to distinguish the body’s own cells and molecules from foreign ones and to maintain the stability, or homeostasis, of the internal environment through its ability to distinguish between its own cells and molecules and foreign ones, and its ability to store information in memory about foreign structures with which it has previously come into contact (immune memory). |
