Description The aim of this article is to summarize and reflect the different conceptions of concession across modern Czech grammars. Grammars have been shown to coincide in some respects (e.g. the existence of different types of concession) and to diverge in some points (e.g. the non/existence of concessive adverbs). The main contribution of the study is seen in the proposal of a more general definition of concession. We consider it to be an onomasiological, semantic-logical ternary relationship, which is equally based on a causal and adversative relation, that is the reason for its asymmetry and inherently polyphonic nature. The concession is always interpreted subjectively and can be captured by means of “concessive triangle”.
